        Resumo:
The new properties of nanoscale systems render them one of the most
promising elements to develop new technologies and products. This is
raising the need of accurately characterizing nanodevices and
nanomaterials, to develop models and predictions of their mechanical
performance and reliability. However, the study of the mechanical behavior
of nanoscale materials still represents a serious challenge; in contrast
with macroscopic materials, nano-objects display the high surface/volume
ratio, then the contribution surface associated phenomena and surface
energy represent dominant terms not usually considered in material
engineering. Here, we will discuss the application of in-situ electron
microscopy experiments to analyze the deformation and rupture of nanoscale
rods and wires. Also, we will discuss the assessment of lattice
distortions generated by screw dislocation in individual semiconductor
       nanowires.
